The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has reportedly commenced investigations into claims that the Attorney-General (AG) of Malaysia, Tommy Thomas, is anti-Islam. The discovery seems consequential to a report Tommy lodged demanding that PDRM probed an internet posting making such a claim. I commend the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun, for his swift action and dedication in responding to Tommy’s complaint. It is with this dedication that I now urge him to investigate yet another complaint, this time, accusing Tommy of leaking banking secrets (hereinafter referred to as “the secrets”) belonging to Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, former Menteri Besar of Selangor.
On the 9thof February 2019, I lodged a report (hereinafter referred to as “the Tommy report”) at the Ibu Pejabat Polis (IPD) in Subang Jaya, Selangor, seeking a discovery into claims that Tommy conspired with a Bank Islam officer to leak the secrets to three PKR leaders. Back when the leak took place, Tommy was yet the bank’s lawyer and assisted the bank with legal proceedings. I made an earnest plea for PDRM to investigate Tommy under the Official Secrets Act 1972 and Section 97(1) of the “Akta Bank dan Institusi-Institusi Kewangan 1989 (ABIK) for criminal breach of conduct against the interest of the general public.
The report was coincidental with yet another (hereinafter referred to as “the Ambiga report”) lodged against Dato’ Ambiga Sreenevasan at the same station on the same day and time. In this report, the police was told of a Defence and Counterclaim (D&C) statement in which Clare Rewcastle Brown accused Ambiga of being her informant. According to the D&C, it was Ambiga who told Clare of the RM90 million Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak was accused of channelling to PAS’ “top echelons.” The Tommy report also spoke of Ambiga and named her as the person to whom Tommy handed the secrets before the secrets ended with Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Saifuddin Nasution and Rafizi Ramli.
It’s been three weeks.
I have yet to be informed of investigation papers being opened against Tommy and Ambiga despite the Tommy report being criminal in nature. On the 13thof February 2019, I messaged the Investigating Officer in charge of the Tommy report and was told that PDRM had yet to determine under which section it would be investigated. It amazes me how Fuzi is burning rubber to get to the bottom of Tommy’s anti-Islam complaint but is dragging his feet when it comes to me. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that an investigation against Tommy and Ambiga can never be conducted unless the former resigns as Attorney-General.
Seriously, how can one expect the AG to decide on his own case? How can we trust Tommy to decide on discoveries made against Ambiga when he himself stands accused of conspiring with her? This is what you call the complete failure of law enforcement and criminal justice. I have no qualms with police investigations into Tommy’s complaint and even invite Lim Kit Siang to lodge a report against me for branding him anti-Islam. But when the IGP dares not advice the government of the day to retire an AG, I say we’re in for the dark ages. The last I checked, Fuzi’s appointment as IGP was by the same Yang di-Pertuan Agong that appointed Tommy to the role of AG.
Why, is Tommy now above the Agong?
