16,000 civil servants to be retrenched by Mahathir admin, claims news portal

Earlier today, a news portal reported that some 16,000 civil servants were set to be retrenched in line with the government’s policy to reduce wastage by trimming the size of the civil service, which currently stands at 1.6 million.

According to the Public Service Department (PSD), the exercise only involved positions that have been vacant for over two years.

TTF: Whatever said, the federal government has not denied the claim that 16,000 civil servants will be retrenched.

PUTRAJAYA: The rationalisation exercise undertaken by the Public Service Department (PSD) only involves positions that have been vacant for over two years.

The PSD in a statement today clarified that the move was an extension towards rationalising the size of civil service since 2008.

“The initiative to control the size of the civil service was presented at the Cabinet Committee Meeting on Transforming the Civil Service last Oct 23 which was chaired by the Prime Minister, and this is not a new measure.

“In fact this has been initiated since 2015 through the Transforming Civil Service Committee Meeting (JKK-TPA) Bil.1, 2015,” the department said.

The statement was following a circular titled ‘Kawalan Saiz Perkhidmatan Awam’ dated on Dec 26, 2018, which stated that the Chief Secretary to the Government during the Secretary-generals and Service Leaders Meeting on Nov 27, 2018, had stressed on the implementation of the measure.

The PSD also said that the downsizing positions do not involve existing civil servants, but through various other means.

“Among measures are optimising human resources, redeployment to avoid overlapping functions, outsourcing, alternative service delivery, technology and prudent job placement based on current needs.

“Therefore, this effort is in line with productivity and utilising human resources optimally and efficiently in the civil service,” the PSD said.
