Despite Universiti Malaya (UM) agreeing to give Wong Yan Ke his degree, the protester made fresh demands, this time, by asking that the university retracted its police report against him as a sign of sincerity.

Wong also made new claims regarding UM vice-chancellor (VC) Datuk Abdul Rahim Hashim.

According to him, Abdul Rahim had “hidden himself behind his staff and the corporate communications department.”

Wong’s demand with regards to the police report is illogical and against the law as nobody is allowed to retract a report once it has been made.

SUBANG JAYA: Despite receiving his degree, Wong Yan Ke made fresh demands, this time, by asking that the university retracted its police report against him as a sign of sincerity.

According to the Malay Mail Online, the engineering student, who spoke to a press conference after obtaining his certificate, was responding to the university’s board of directors’ statement over his certificate being allegedly with held by the management.

The report read:

“If the university’s (board of directors) wants to uphold freedom of expression (like what they said in their press statement yesterday), why don’t they show their sincerity by taking actions instead of just speaking?

“They should show their sincerity by retracting the police report lodged against me. This will reflect on upholding the freedom of speech,” Wong said.

Wong also made new claims regarding Universiti Malaya (UM) vice-chancellor (VC) Datuk Abdul Rahim Hashim.

According to him, Abdul Rahim had “hidden himself behind his staff and the corporate communications department.”

When asked if Abdul Rahim had conducted himself in a cowardly manner for refusing to explain his statement at the Malay Dignity Congress and for bullying the student after the protest, Wong’s lawyer Asheeq Ali said that the vice chancellor had behaved “unprofessionally”.

“Instead of branding him as a coward, let’s call him unprofessional. He is being unprofessional in terms of being a VC, for refusing to explain himself and for hiding behind people’s back,” said Asheeq.

Wong’s demand with regards to the police report is illogical and against the law as nobody is allowed to retract a report once it has been made.

A police report constitutes documentary evidence of an action pursuant to law taken by an individual for reasons he (or she) feels are necessary.

The correct thing for Wong to have done would have been to ask that UM make a written application so that no action is taken against the report.

The onus would then be on the Public Prosecutor to allow or reject the application based on facts and circumstances surrounding the case.
