Anwar gets desperate, hints Azmin can dream on

“The consensus also does not state that Mahathir needs to propose Anwar’s name as his successor to the (Yang di-Pertuan) Agong, just that he agrees that Anwar becomes the next PM” – RJ Rithaudeen. Source (pic): TTF Files

PKR president Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim displayed clear signs of desperation and annoyance when reiterating – for the umpteenth time, in a span of mere weeks – that he was the next Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Anwar’s remark was an apparent swipe at his deputy, Dato’ Seri Azmin Ali, who is being touted as Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s preferred candidate for the top job.

Yesterday, TTF pointed out that Anwar had tacitly agreed to the fact that a so-called ‘premiership transition agreement’ specifying Mahathir’s tenure as Prime Minister does not exist.

According to Raggie Jessy Rithaudeen, there was only consensus among key PH leaders that Anwar would be the next Prime Minister and that Mahathir would resign before the full parliamentary term is up.

PETALING JAYA: PKR president Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim displayed clear signs of desperation and annoyance when reiterating – for the umpteenth time, in a span of mere weeks – that he was the next Prime Minister of Malaysia.

According to a news report, Anwar told Turkish broadcaster TRT during an interview that Aspiring to become the prime minister is not wrong but it will continue to be a dream until one commands the majority support of the Parliament.

Anwar’s remark was an apparent swipe at his deputy, Dato’ Seri Azmin Ali, who is being touted as Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s preferred candidate for the top job.

“It’s not a crime for anyone to aspire to become the prime minister but he has to enjoy the support of the majority and I think for now, until the meeting last week among the party leaders, there is no consideration of any other name.

“People can dream, can aspire, but that does not mean that you are going to shake or scuttle the process, and furthermore, it has been duly agreed and signed so you have to then undo this process.

“There is no attempt or initiative to undo this,” he reportedly said.

“A consensus is not binding unless it comes along with a signed agreement. Anwar was in prison, he signed nothing.

“The consensus also does not state that Mahathir needs to propose Anwar’s name as his successor to the (Yang di-Pertuan) Agong, just that he agrees that Anwar becomes the next PM,” he said.

Rithaudeen added that when Mahathir agreed to Anwar becoming Prime Minister, it simply means he agreed to go along with any decision made by the Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council when the time comes.

“Ultimately, it is not Anwar who decides, but the Agong. And the Agong has the prerogative of deciding who he thinks commands majority support in parliament irrespective what the presidential council says.”
