Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told Bloomberg that the newly minted Preikatan Nasional government is not likely to survive until the next general election.

In an interview conducted on Tuesday, the PKR president and opposition leader hinted that the ruling coalition was not confident of itself, and as such, conducted parliament irregularly to escape a vote of no confidence.

On the 8th of May 2020, Mahathir Mahathir got the nod to table a motion of no-confidence against Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in the (then) upcoming one-day parliament sitting on the 18th of May 2020.

However, Muhyiddin delayed the vote five days later by reducing the special parliament sitting to a single-order session only to listen to the yang di-Pertuan Agong’s address.

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told Bloomberg that the newly minted Preikatan Nasional government is not likely to survive until the next general election.

In an interview conducted on Tuesday, the PKR president and opposition leader hinted that the ruling coalition was not confident of itself, and as such, conducted parliament irregularly to escape a vote of no confidence.

“If the current government actually had the confidence, they would have conducted the affairs of parliament in a more usual manner. They did not.

“And clearly they were fearful of the success — of possibility of success — of the vote of no confidence. So the issue of the legitimacy of the government is in question now,” he said.

The Perikatan Nasional coalition is said to have a simple 114-seat majority, though former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has disputed this.

According to Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof, Muhyiddin informed him that the government had decided to list only one order of parliamentary business for the day, the opening address by the king, on the basis that “as the Covid-19 pandemic has not been fully cleared”

Meanwhile, Anwar told Bloomberg that Pakatan Harapan would focus on ensuring that its lawmakers remain intact.
