Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that by convention, ministerial appointments were the prerogative of the prime minister and that any discussion on filling the vacant education minister post by Pakatan Harapan leaders would only be held if there was a need.

Yesterday, however, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) reacted strongly to DAP Secretary General Lim Guan Eng’s suggestion that Maszlee’s replacement be discussed by Pakatan Harapan.

In a press statement issued barely three hours after the suggestion, PPBM’s Information Chief, Dr Radzi Jidin, stressed that Dr Maszlee Malik’s replacement was the prerogative of the Prime Minister and that the matter need not be discussed by Pakatan Harapan unless the Prime Minister himself felt the need to do so.

Maszlee resigned as Education Minister on Thursday amid rumours that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was displeased with the way he handled the jawi and khat calligraphy issue.

There are even claims that Maszlee is with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and that the duo had a hand in dishonouring a deal previously entered by the Ministry of Education with YTL Corporation.

PETALING JAYA: Bernama reports that a tickled Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim brushed off suggestions that he was in line for the education minister post.

“I am not on the list,” the PKR president and Port Dickson MP said, breaking out in laughter, when broached about the subject by the media.

According to the report, Anwar said that by convention, ministerial appointments were the prerogative of the prime minister and that any discussion on filling the vacant education minister post by Pakatan Harapan leaders would only be held if there was a need.

“It is up to the prime minister and the PH leadership if the matter needs to be discussed. But in my opinion (ministerial) vacancies are always filled based on the wisdom of the PM,” he told reporters after officiating an excellence awards ceremony for outstanding Tamil school students in Selangor for the years 2016-2019, here.

Earlier, PPBM’s Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub more or less said the same thing when asked if a Cabinet reshuffle was imminent.

Dr Maszlee Malik resigned as Education Minister on Thursday amid rumours that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was displeased with the way he handled the jawi and khat calligraphy issue.

Speculation is rife that the Prime Minister and PPBM’s central leadership isn’t satisfied with Maszlee’s willingness to compromise with Dong Zong and defend his deputy, Teo Nie Ching, over the distribution of pro-communist comic books to Chinese school children.
