On the 14th of April 1999, then ousted Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty in a corruption trial.

Anwar was convicted on four charges of abusing his office to cover up acts of sodomy and adultery.

According to reports, Anwar was convicted of ordering the police in 1997 to obtain retractions from two people who had accused him of sex crimes.

With that record, can anyone trust him to act impartially and refrain from abusing his office to manipulate police and MACC investigations?

Due to Anwar’s background, former Senior Private Secretary to the Eighth Prime Minister, Datuk Dr Marzuki Mohamad, reminded the Prime Minister not to interfere in investigations by the MACC and the police.

“The important thing is that Datuk Seri should not interfere with investigations, and preferably, do not make any statements.

“Submit to the MACC KP (Chief Commissioner).

“First (it was the RM)600 billion (issue)(, then the tens of billions, then 7 billion.

“Then there are statements about political funds from gambling companies and so on.

“Then, the Home Affairs Minister said he would discuss the 600 billion article with the IGP.

“What does the IGP have to do with the 600 billion?

“Even Datuk Seri (himself) has also said that it is not 600 billion.

“What will people say about this Prime Minister?

(They will call it) caca merba (haywire) and Datuk Seri has a “personal vendetta”. This is not good for Datuk Seri’s image as PM.

“You must not only be impartial, but must be seen to be impartial.

“If not, should there be a prosecution, na’uzubillah, people will say it is politically motivated and selective prosecution.

“That wouldn’t be nice, would it?”
