A Pakatan Harapan (PH) Member of Parliament has taken PKR’s Saifuddin Nasution to task over the Home Minister’s defence of a controversial security law, allowing police to detain suspects for up to a month.

The said MP, Hassan Karim, reminded Saifuddin that PH had all along opposed detention without trial, referring to the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, abbreviated to SOSMA.

Previously, Hassan chided Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for appointing a member of UMNO’s Court Cluster, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, as Deputy Prime Minister.

In a Facebook post, the Pasir Gudang MP said he believed party leaders when they said they would not compromise on their principles for the sake of winning power.

Earlier, DAP’s Gobind Singh Deo said something along the lines, stressing PH’s stand that the law was “problematic” and “oppressive.”

Hassan penned a poem to express his dismay, saying;

“At that time, we were just reformers on the streets, homeless.

“It’s different now; the world has changed; we are already in power,” he said in a poem posted on Facebook.

“We have started talking about detention without trial; even for almost a month is fine; for the sake of national security.”

“I took a wooden box next to my bed and folded and kept every pamphlet and texts of my speeches which cried ‘Reformasi, reformasi’ for nearly a quarter of a century now.

“Now I am ashamed of myself. I am ashamed to speak these words of wisdom (kata-kata keramat) anymore.

“Half my soul is dead. I feel defeated amid a victory without integrity like this,” said the two-term MP.
