Azmin-Mahathir man appointed Selangor MB

TTF: Dr Idris Ahmad said today that the appointment of Amirudin Shari as Selangor Menteri Besar (see news item below) was not endorsed by Pakatan Harapan. This is the second time a PKR leader has come out to criticise the appointment of Pakatan reps in positions of power. On the 12th of May 2018, former Pandan Member of Parliament (MP) Rafizi Ramli alleged that Dr Mahathir bulldozed through the appointment of three government ministers without first consulting PKR.

Amirudin is a Mahathir man.

KLANG: Sungai Tua assemblyman and state executive councillor Amirudin Shari was sworn in as the 16th Selangor Menteri Besar at Istana Alam Shah here, this morning.

The 38-year-old took the oath of office before the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah at the Balairung Seri (Throne Room) at 10am.

Amirudin also read out the ‘Aku Janji 10’ (10-point pledge), which includes ‘defending the sanctity of Islam while respecting other religions; guarding the sovereignty of the royal institution; defending the institution from being tarnished and threatened by any quarter; protecting the special position of the Malays and legitimate rights of other races in accordance with the Federal Constitution and Selangor State Constitution 1959; carrying out duties with integrity and full responsibility; and protecting the position from actions that violate the law.

He also pledged to prioritise the people, as long as it does not adversely affect the state’s interests, stability, wellbeing and security.

The ceremony was conducted in the presence of Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and Raja Muda Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah.

Amirudin replaces the Economic Affairs Minister, Gombak Member of Parliament and Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who served as menteri besar since Sept 2014 when Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim stepped down amidst a political crisis.

Amirudin was the state Sports and Youth Generation Empowerment, Entrepreneurial Development, Traditional Villages and Rural Development Committee chairman.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia.

He has been active in the political scene, particularly in PKR since 2004. He was Batu Caves assemblyman from 2008 to 2018, and is now Sungai Tua assemblyman.

He is passionate about programmes geared towards empowering and uplifting youths and sports in the state.

At today’s ceremony, Sultan Sharafuddin also appointed Batu Tiga assemblyman Rodziah Ismail as Amirudin’s replacement. She took the oath of office and read out the Aku Janji pledge.

On May 21, the ruler’s private secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, announced that Azmin would step down from his post once the Sultan gives his consent to a replacement candidate.

The announcement came following Azmin’s meeting with the Sultan on May 19 to inform the ruler of his appointment as the Economic Affairs Minister in the Pakatan Harapan Cabinet.

Several names had cropped up as possible candidates for the Menteri Besar post, including Ijok assemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad and Seri Setia assemblyman, Shaharudin Badaruddin.

Azmin and state excos were present at the ceremony today.

Azmin, who clocked out as Selangor Menteri Besar for the last time at the state secretariat building yesterday, officially resigned from his position when he handed his resignation letter to the Sultan of Selangor at the Bilik Mengadap, Istana Alam Shah at 9.30am today.
