Bersatu man dares Ismail Sabri to admit he was pressured by Zahid to dissolve parliament

A Bersatu leader has challenged Ismail Sabri Yaakob to hold his own party boss responsible for the dissolution of Parliament, after the prime minister said he had to call for snap polls because 12 ministers from Perikatan Nasional (PN) “behaved inappropriately” by writing to the Agong to voice their disagreement on holding the general election this year.

Kamaruddin Jaafar said it was public knowledge that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had been pressuring Ismail to dissolve Parliament despite the latter’s reluctance to do so, due to widespread concerns over the flood season as well as the disruption to economic recovery.

On Tuesday, a day after announcing the dissolution of Parliament which could see the 15th general election coinciding with the monsoon season, Ismail attacked his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin for criticising Barisan Nasional (BN), saying this was why the government could not function properly.

He also hit out at 12 of his Cabinet members from Bersatu and PAS, accusing them of turning their backs on his administration.

“The prime minister should instead reprimand his party president if he has the courage to do so.

“In fact, he needs to be honest and admit that he was pressured and forced to announce the dissolution at the insistence of the Umno leadership,” Kamaruddin, who served as the deputy foreign minister in Ismail’s administration, said in a statement.

This came after the group penned a letter to the palace to voice their disagreement with calls by Umno leaders for the dissolution of Parliament, citing forecasts of heavy rain and floods in the coming weeks by the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

Since taking office in August last year, Ismail had been under intense pressure from a faction of Umno leaders aligned with Zahid and jailed leader Najib Razak to call for polls in the belief that Umno would have a chance of retaking federal power.

But observers and critics have linked such calls to the court cases stacked against the duo, with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad saying that an Umno-led government after the election would see to it that Najib is released from prison, while other leaders facing multiple corruption charges escape prosecution.

Zahid admitted as much when he told MIC delegates on Monday that the coming polls would determine not only his fate, but also that of other BN leaders as well as MIC and MCA.

“It is not only me who will be charged, Tok Mat, you are on the waiting list,” he said, referring to Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

Last month, Zahid was acquitted of 40 charges linked to bribes allegedly received as the home minister, related to the contract for the foreign visa system.

He still faces 35 charges of money laundering and criminal breach of trust involving millions from Yayasan Akalbudi and bribes for various projects. If convicted of these, he could join Najib in jail.

Kamaruddin in his statement said that Ismail’s shifting of blame to his own ministers for the holding of GE15 this year smacked of “dishonesty and distortion”.

“The pressure by the selfish Umno leadership was evident in the recent MIC inauguration speech by Zahid, when he openly stated that BN must win big in the upcoming election to save him and the BN leaders whom he named one by one from charges in court,” he added.
