Beware of Zahid’s trap

“Which investor would trust UMNO, seeing as the party was also responsible for the collapse of two governments in a span of less than three years, bypassing the need to seek mandates from the people?”

A news report quoted DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke as saying, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob should not be worried if UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi threatens to withdraw his support for the prime minister.

According to Loke, even if Zahid decided to do so, the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Ismail Sabri’s administration and Pakatan Harapan (PH) would still stand.

“Don’t worry if Zahid makes threats. I’ve said in Parliament before and advised Ismail Sabri. You are the prime minister today.

“Act as the prime minister and not just a party follower,” Loke reportedly said at a special DAP congress.

I admire Loke for saying this.

By telling Ismail Sabri that the MoU will stand, people will now know that the government is stable and that Zahid is talking rubbish.

However, telling the prime minister that the DAP “is not afraid” of an early election was a bad move, as this is precisely what the Court Cluster wants.

Zahid is well aware that Ismail Sabri cannot be controlled.

So, the next best thing is to provoke opposition leaders, so that these leaders will retaliate by saying, “we are not afraid of an early election.”

When opposition leaders say this, the Court Cluster will up the ante by telling grassroots leaders, that if Ismail Sabri does not advise the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve parliament, it will look as if “UMNO is afraid.”

This will put additional pressure on Ismail Sabri to seek an audience with the Ruler, and assuming that the former does propose the dissolution of parliament, no MoU can stop the Ruler from agreeing to the proposal.

I mean, did it not occur to Loke that the government is UMNO-run and at liberty to ask the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve parliament whenever it likes, without the need to provoke the opposition?

Zahid is desperate

In the past six months, Zahid has given five contradicting reasons as to why an early election is necessary (read reasons via article below), none of which negates the fact that an early election is detrimental to the economy.

Tell me, which sane-minded investor would pump money in Malaysia should UMNO choose to destabilise its “own government,” barely a year before the 14th Malaysian Parliament expires?

Which investor would trust UMNO, seeing as the party was also responsible for the collapse of two governments in a span of less than three years, bypassing the need to seek mandates from the people?

Zahid himself admitted not too long ago that a hung parliament is a possibility, meaning, he is unsure if Barisan Nasional can win.

If that is the case, Ismail Sabri is no longer needs to uphold any decision made by UMNO’s supreme council regarding the general election.

This is considering that any decision made during the UMNO general assembly takes precedence over decisions made by the party’s supreme council.

During the last general assembly, it was decided that the general election needed to be brought forward since Zahid gave assurance that Barisan Nasional would win.

However, now that Zahid is unsure, there need not be an early election.

Period.
