KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) is fielding a 58-year-old local, Zakaria Hanafi, as its candidate for the Semenyih by-election on March 2.
In making the announcement at the BN command centre at Plaza Datuk Mohd Said, acting BN chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan expressed confidence in a victory for the coalition.
He said Zakaria, who is former Umno Kampung Sesapan Kelubi branch permanent chairman and a Semenyih man, will be the winning factor for BN.
“Our candidate is one who can not only be accepted by the locals but also one who can be accepted by the machineries. This decision was made after much consideration as we received six other nominations as well.
“All the candidates were credible, with one even holding a doctorate in engineering. However, that was not what we were looking for.
“We wanted someone who could go to the ground and convince the people here to vote for BN,” he said.
Mohamad urged the people to take the by-election as a referendum to show their dissatisfaction with the government for not fulfilling Pakatan Harapan had made prior to the 14th general election.
Polling for the Semenyih state seat in Selangor will be on March 2, with nomination day set for Feb 16.
The seat was declared vacant following the death of assemblyman Bakhtiar Mohd Nor, 57, of a heart attack on Jan 11 at Kajang Hospital.
Bakhtiar garnered 23,428 votes to beat three other candidates — Datuk Johan Abdul Aziz (BN), Mad Shahmidur Mat Kosim (Pas) and S. Arutchelvan (PSM) — by a majority of 8,964 votes.
