Lead defence counsel in the ongoing 1MDB trial, Tan Sri Mohamad Shafee Abdullah, told the Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday that local banking group AmBank had conspired with Penang-born businessman Low Taek Jho aka Jho Low to embezzle millions of ringgit, presumably from 1MDB.

Shafee, when cross-examining Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi, showed the latter some documents involving Low’s company and Ambank where a secondary agreement was signed before the primary one was inked.

Yesterday, Shahrol stunned the High Court by saying he did not blame former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak over the 1MDB scandal.

Shahrol said this when asked if he, like Najib, was conned by Low whom he had explicitly trusted.

SUBANG JAYA: Lead defence counsel in the ongoing 1MDB trial, Tan Sri Mohammad Shafee Abdullah, told the Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday that local banking group AmBank had conspired with Penang-born businessman Low Taek Jho aka Jho Low to embezzle millions of ringgit, presumably from 1MDB.

According to a report by NST Online, Shafee said Low had walked away with the money through a deal with the bank and companies linked to him.

Shafee said this when cross-examining Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi, a former chief executive officer (CEO) of 1MDB and key prosecution witness.

“He swiped all that money right under the noses of Ambank with just a flip of the coin.

“He did it all without the knowledge of the Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA) and right under the noses of TIA,” Shafee was reported as saying.

The NST report read:

Shafee, when cross-examining Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi, showed the latter some documents involving Low’s company and Ambank where a secondary agreement was signed before the primary one was inked.

The veteran counsel then asked Shahrol if he knew about companies like Aktis Capital Singapore Pte Ltd and Country Group, which were all linked to Low.

However, Shahrol said he only became aware of Aktis Capital when he was questioned by the police as part of the 1MDB investigation.

Shafee said he would be questioning Shahrol more on the matter when the trial continues tomorrow.

Yesterday, Shahrol stunned the High Court by saying he did not blame former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak over the 1MDB scandal.

Shahrol said this when asked if he, like Najib, was conned by Low whom he had explicitly trusted.

Asked if he could weigh in whether or not Najib was a culprit in the conspiracy, Shahrol however replied that it was not his place to do so.
