‘Complete’ support for Muhyiddin but not for Perikatan Nasional?

Barisan Nasional (BN) assured Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that the coalition will give him full support should a motion of no confidence be tabled in parliament.

This was expressed by UMNO president and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who said BN would also continue to support the Perikatan Nasional government that Muhyiddin led.

But when it came to the question of supporting Perikatan Nasional itself, Zahid was calculated. According to him, the formal registration of PN was something that needed to “go through certain processes” among the coalition’s component parties.

If indeed Zahid is serious about BN “supporting Muhyiddin’s premiership” and “the government run by Muhyiddin,” it is illogical for BN not to support also the “coalition Muhyiddin established in place of Pakatan Harapan” to bring UMNO back into power.

PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional (BN) assured Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin that the coalition will give him full support should a motion of no confidence be tabled in parliament.

This was expressed by UMNO president and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who said BN would also continue to support the Perikatan Nasional government that Muhyiddin led.

“BN will continue to give our undivided support and belief in Muhyiddin’s leadership as the eighth prime minister and BN will continue to support the PN government led by the prime minister,” he reportedly said.

But when it came to the question of supporting Perikatan Nasional itself, Zahid was calculated.

According to him, the formal registration of PN was something that needed to “go through certain processes” among the coalition’s component parties.

That makes very little sense, as it was Barisan Nasional that agreed to form Perikatan Nasional in the first place when Muhyiddin and Datuk Seri Azmin Ali staged a coup to collapse the previous Pakatan Harapan administraton.

If indeed Zahid is serious about BN “supporting Muhyiddin’s premiership” and “the government run by Muhyiddin,” it is illogical for BN not to support also the “coalition Muhyiddin established in place of Pakatan Harapan” to bring UMNO back into power.

For the record, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Mohd Yusof on Friday confirmed receiving a letter from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stating the latter’s intent to motion a vote of no-confidence against Muhyiddin.

Ariff went on record to say that the request had been accepted but stressed that priority would be given to government matters during a special sitting scheduled for the 18th of May 2020.
