A news report today claimed Datuk Seri Khaled Noordin told UMNO parliamentarians who expressed support for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to remain as prime minister to sit out the Tanjung Piai by-election campaign.
However, Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had previously stated that he would not stop the Opposition lawmakers from stating their position but insisted that Barisan Nasional and UMNO did not share the view that Dr Mahathir should serve out his full term.
This is in stark contrast to views taken by PAS which has openly stated its support for Mahathir as full-term premier and its willingness to back him should there be a coup attempt.
On the 27th of July 2019, PAS president Dato’ Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said PAS wanted Mahathir to complete his term in office until the next election to uphold the interests of the Malays and Muslims.
PETALING JAYA: A news report today claimed Datuk Seri Khaled Noordin told UMNO parliamentarians who expressed support for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to remain as prime minister to sit out the Tanjung Piai by-election campaign.
According to the report, the UMNO vice-president wrote a Facebook post to back Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s remark that the public show of support for a rival party’s leader was not UMNO’s stand.
However, Zahid had clearly stated that he would not stop the Opposition lawmakers from making their stand but insisted that Barisan Nasional and UMNO did not share the view that Dr Mahathir should serve out his full term.

This is in stark contrast to views taken by PAS which has openly stated its support for Mahathir as a full-term premier and its willingness to back him should there be a coup attempt.
On the 27th of July 2019, PAS president Dato’ Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said PAS wanted Mahathir to complete his term in office until the next election to uphold the interests of the Malays and Muslims.
Hadi even spoke on behalf of UMNO, stating clearly that the Barisan Nasional component party also wanted Mahathir to complete his term in office until the next election.
“PAS and Umno take the same stand that it will defend the premiership of Dr Mahathir until the next general election.
“Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) only won 13 seats in Parliament in GE14 and that is not a strength in Pakatan Harapan. We know there will be a clash (between Pakatan parties for the premiership) and when that happens, what will Dr Mahathir do.
Hadi’s statement came barely two months prior to the signing of an accord between PAS and UMNO that made official political cooperation between the two Malay-centric parties.
