DAP more worried about UM incident than combating terrorism

There is nothing that Wong has said thus far – not to the media, not anywhere – that suggests he exhausted all avenues towards the resolution he sought before deciding to disrupt a ceremony catered for thousands of students who were there to celebrate, not demonstrate. Source (pic): TTF

The DAP should step aside and give Universiti Malaya space to handle its own affairs, beginning with the fate of Wong Yan Ke, an engineering student who created a ruckus by disrespecting a convocation ceremony.

For all intents and purposes, Wong was wrong in every sense of the word as the act of rudely disrupting the convocation ceremony for whatever reason can only be justified if the act was in absolute desperation, perhaps even a matter of life and death.

The Ministry of Education should take the lead by explaining to the DAP that “political interference” of any sort will only muddy the water as Wong is already seen to be a DAP proxy.

It is ironic that Lim Kit Siang, who isn’t even a minister, has so much time to spare on an issue that is of no concern to him but can’t spare a few words to the press on how he plans to tackle “the possible involvement of DAP leaders with the LTTE.”

SUBANG JAYA: The DAP should step aside and give Universiti Malaya space to handle its own affairs, beginning with the fate of Wong Yan Ke, an engineering student who created a ruckus by disrespecting a convocation ceremony.

On Monday, Wong courted anger when he held up a placard accusing vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Rashid of racism and calling for the latter’s resignation.

He did this while receiving his scroll on stage at Dewan Tunku Canselor during UM’s 59th convocation ceremony.

This led to the barring of another graduate, Edan Kon Hua En, from participating in his convocation the next day when auxiliary police found a folded placard in his possession.

UM lodged a police report against Wong the next day against Wong, filed under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentionally insulting and provoking a person knowing it can disrupt public peace.

For all intents and purposes, Wong was wrong in every sense of the word as the act of rudely disrupting a convocation ceremony for whatever reason can only be justified if the act was in absolute desperation, perhaps even a matter of life and death.

There is nothing that Wong has said thus far – not to the media, not anywhere – that suggests he exhausted all avenues towards the resolution he was seeking before deciding to disrupt a ceremony catered for thousands of students who were there to celebrate, not demonstrate.

Arguing that Wong had the right to do what he did is akin to saying that the recipient of a royal award can also create a ruckus while receiving the award from a state ruler.

In a press conference, Wong alleged that he was forced to do what he did as the VC had ignored him all this while.

If that is the case, Wong could easily have staged a demonstration at another date outside the Chancellery  Complex where the VC’s office is located.

He could also have held the demonstration outside the convocation hall where he would have garnered attention without disrupting the ceremony.

In any event, the DAP should butt out of the whole affair and refrain from issuing meaningless statements as the matter is currently being handled by the police.
