The DAP may just have bitten off more than it can chew, and judging from the backlash it is receiving, the Pakatan Harapan component party may well be on the way towards losing a large chunk of its support base come the 15th general election.
On Monday (13th of September), the Government of Malaysian entered a bipartisan cooperation with Pakatan Harapan by means of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), bringing about the potential for political stability until the 31st of July 2022.
While the move was hailed as historic, both Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional supporters aren’t nearly as enthusiastic.
UMNO and PAS supporters are pissed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri is bending over for the DAP, while the DAP’s grassroots are furious that the party is willing to support a government that condones PAS’ extreme views.
Nobody believes that the MoU is the DAP’s way of preventing Ismail Sabri from being subject to the demands of the Court Cluster.
Let us not forget that the DAP was ‘accomplice’ to a plot hatched by the Court Cluster – led by Barisan Nasional advisor Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi – to topple Muhyiddin.
Then, not only did the DAP discuss with members of the Court Cluster the possibility of working together, Nga Kor Ming even expressed his readiness to work with UMNO when asked to comment on Zahid’s statement that Umno is willing to work with the DAP.
So you see, the idea that the DAP signed the MoU just to prevent Ismail Sabri from being subject to the demands of the Court Cluster is hogwash, to say the least.
Not only did the DAP ‘conspire’ with the Court Cluster on more than one occasion, it helped the Court Cluster bring Muhyiddin down.
How, you ask?
By refusing to accept the very terms of ‘cooperation’ it now readily accepts, back when said terms were offered to DAP leaders by Muhyiddin.
Back then, the DAP already knew that the Court Cluster had moved 14 UMNO Members of Parliament (MPs) to sign statutory declarations (SDs) against Muhyiddin’s favour, and yet, did nothing to help Muhyiddin.
Because of this, Muhyiddin was forced to resign as Prime Minister.
If indeed the DAP was so hard pressed to prevent the Court Cluster from rising, why the heck did the party not help Muhyiddin by signing an MoU with him instead?
See the ruse?
Obviously, the DAP was hoping for the Court Cluster to form a pact with Pakatan Harapan and other willing parties towards the establishment of a new coalition with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister candidate (refer charts below).
While it is true that Tony Pua was skeptical such a coalition could ever materialise, the DAP’s leadership was convinced that Najib and Zahid would continue supporting Anwar and not back out.
However, when Najib and Zahid decided to support Ismail Sabri instead, the DAP got angry.
So now, the mission is to ‘punish’ the Court Cluster by making sure that the 15th general election is held only after the courts decide on Najib’s and Zahid’s cases.
Being desperate, Najib and Zahid may concede to the DAP’s wishes and agree to support Anwar once more.
So don’t be surprised if the DAP suddenly withdraws its support for Ismail Sabri, provided that Najib and Zahid can get at least 21 Barisan Nasional Members of Parliament to follow suit and support Anwar.
Earlier today, Lim Kit Siang claimed that the DAP needed to lead public opinion on a political ceasefire in the country.
This came a day after Tony Pua tried to assuage angry DAP supporters by saying that the MoU Pakatan Harapan signed was to prevent Ismail Sabri from being subject to the demands of the Court Cluster.
But alas, the damage is done.
There is no way on earth the DAP can wade its way out of the mess it is in or explain why the party suddenly accepts “a rip-off government” and Muhyiddin as MPN chairman.
If indeed the mission is to work together with Ismail Sabri “as a family,” the DAP should have stuck to principles by demanding a vote of confidence, a reduction in Cabinet size, a change in Cabinet composition and a new MPN Chairman before agreeing to sign a Memorandum of Understanding.
Of course, Ismail Sabri would have ignored all these demands and called for an election before the year end, but that would not be a bad thing as our country would definitely have reached herd immunity by then.
To say that “a year-end election cannot be held as Covid-19 numbers are still high” no longer works, as not only would Covid-19 be endemic by then, the goal was never to fully eradicate the disease – which, quite frankly, is impossible – but to attain herd immunity, so as to reduce the number of ICU cases and deaths.
