Did someone in Guan Eng’s ministry divert funds meant for Bernama?

National news agency Bernama has fingered the Lim Guan Eng led Ministry of Finance as culprit when justifying its decision to pay staff salaries by skipping Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions.

In response, Lim told reporters that his ministry was looking into the possibility that Bernama had diverted funds meant for salaries for other purposes.

TTF is of the opinion that the remark is a reflection of Lim’s inadequacy in handling crisis situations professionally given his tendency to insinuate blame even before investigations commence.

The insinuation borders on damage control and casts a negative stigma upon the MoF, now seen to be defensive almost as if it has something to hide.

The blame game always works both ways. It follows, if Guan Eng can be so bold as to suggest that Bernama couls have diverted funds meant for staff salaries, we can also say that someone in the MoF may quietly have diverted funds meant for Bernama.

Question is, will Guan Eng now launch a probe to investigate the possibility?

PETALING JAYA: National news agency Bernama has fingered the Lim Guan Eng led Ministry of Finance as culprit when justifying its decision to pay staff salaries by skipping Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions.

According to FMT, Bernama told its staff that the cash flow problems it faced was due to the MoF’s delay in extending a grant.

“So we used the money (from the EPF contributions) to pay for your July salaries.

“Yes, we can make the decision to pay all your EPF contributions which means we will then not be able to pay your recent July salaries,” the portal reported a Syarifah Zaini Syed Zain as saying.

Meanwhile, Guan Eng told reporters today that the allegation was serious and that his ministry has initiated a probe into it.

“I have ordered the Finance Ministry to start investigations to find out who should be responsible for this serious position and who halted payments for the EPF contributions so that action can be taken.

“The Federal Government is not a bankrupt government as certain states that cannot afford to pay members of their administration,” he said in a statement.

Lim was quick to add that his ministry was also looking into the possibility that Bernama diverted funds meant for salaries for other purposes.
