Duit Raya: Give if you want to give, don’t if you don’t, but no need for intimidating remarks

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirms 112,635 Felda settlers will receive “duit raya” of RM300 each.

Yesterday, an official government circular made its way into social media pertaining to the special Raya aid for Felda settlers.

The circular, dated May 30, was signed by the chief secretary of the Economic Affairs Ministry Datuk Yatimah Sarjiman and was directed to Felda director-general Datuk Dr Othman Omar.

TTF: All the comments about Felda settlers “harvesting fruits from trees they did not plant” is not necessary.

Don’t make the settlers feel as if the government is reluctant to hand out aid during raya.

Not everything in life is about harvesting fruits from trees you plant.

Sometimes, its about “giving when you have more” in the spirit of sharing and caring.


TOKYO: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirms 112,635 Felda settlers will receive “duit raya” of RM300 each.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Imperial Hotel, here, today, Dr Mahathir said the government took into consideration the financial burden of targeted groups as they had to wait for oil palm trees to bear fruits.




The “duit raya” for Felda settlers amounts to RM34 million with the prime minister saying the government was willing to sacrifice for the settlers, but pointed out that the settlers should workd hard and to not “harvest fruits from trees that they did not plant”.

Dr Mahathir who is on a working visit to Japan was accompanied at the press conference by deputy foreign minister Datuk Marzuki Yahya and Malaysian ambassador to Japan Datuk Kennedy Jawan.

It stated that the Cabinet had agreed on May 29 to give cash aid ahead of the Hari Raya celebrations to Felda settlers.

Meanwhile, the prime minister reminded settlers not to sell their produce to non-accredited oil palm traders just to make a few extra ringgit.

“When replanting, we hope the fruits are sent to factories that are accredited by the government but there are those who send to other factories and pocket the money.

“That is wrong and should not be done. They (settlers) do not fork out any money in replanting, in fact the government gives them allowance because we know they have no source of income,” he said.
