A public dispute has emerged between Elon Musk and California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office following commentary involving Musk’s transgender child, who goes by Vivian Jenna Wilson.
According to a Fox News report, the exchange was sparked after Musk’s America PAC shared a clip from The Ezra Klein Show in which Newsom stated, “There’s no governor that’s done more pro-trans legislation than I have.”
Following the reposted clip, Newsom’s press office responded directly to Musk’s political organization with a pointed comment on X, the social media platform owned by Musk. “Correct. We’re sorry your daughter hates you, Elon,” the account wrote.
Musk replied publicly, rejecting the characterization and reiterating his position regarding his child’s identity. “I assume you’re referring to my son, Xavier, who has a tragic mental illness caused by the evil woke mind virus you push on vulnerable children.”

The remark was made as Newsom discussed transgender participation in women’s sports—an issue on which he has recently diverged from several Democratic leaders.
That divergence drew renewed attention earlier this month when Newsom, speaking with Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk on the debut episode of his podcast This is Gavin Newsom, described the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports as “deeply unfair.”
Following the reposted clip, Newsom’s press office responded directly to Musk’s political organization with a pointed comment on X, the social media platform owned by Musk. “Correct. We’re sorry your daughter hates you, Elon,” the account wrote.
Musk replied publicly, rejecting the characterization and reiterating his position regarding his child’s identity. “I assume you’re referring to my son, Xavier, who has a tragic mental illness caused by the evil woke mind virus you push on vulnerable children.
“I love Xavier very much and hope he recovers,” Musk wrote. He added, “My daughters are Azure, Exa (she goes by Y) and Arcadia, and they do indeed love me very much.”
Shortly afterward, Musk pinned a separate post to his profile stating, “If you have a womb, you are a woman. Otherwise, you are not.”
Musk has previously spoken at length about the issue of gender-related medical treatment for minors. During a 2024 interview with psychologist and author Dr. Jordan Peterson, he said he was “essentially tricked” into authorizing puberty blockers for Wilson.
“It happened to one of my older boys, where I was essentially tricked into signing documents for one of my older boys, Xavier. This is before I had any understanding of what was going on. COVID was going on, so there was a lot of confusion, and I was told Xavier might commit suicide if he doesn’t,” Musk said.
In the same interview, Musk addressed the concept of “deadnaming,” the practice of referring to a transgender person by their birth name. “I lost my son, essentially. They call it deadnaming for a reason,” he said. “The reason it’s called ‘deadnaming’ is because your son is dead. So, my son Xavier is dead, killed by the woke mind virus.”
Musk concluded by saying that the experience led him to take a firm stance on the issue. He said he “vowed to destroy the woke mind virus.”
