He said the cost for the study would be borne by LPK and if it is positive for implementation, the project cost would be borne by the company given the concession.
Pressed further if the cost was RM200 billion as announced by Liow, Loke said the Pakatan Harapan government was not bound by any announcements made by the previous government.
PUTRAJAYA: The government will conduct a feasibility study on building a port in Carey Island, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said the feasibility study which was expected to take about a year would be done by the Port Klang Authority (LPK) from November after LPK appoints a qualified consulting company through a request for proposal.
“After the study is done, the findings will be tabled to the Cabinet for a decision whether to offer the job to a concessionaire through open tender or appoint a company based on their capability,” he told a press conference here today.
He said the cost for the study would be borne by LPK and if it is positive for implementation, the project cost would be borne by the company given the concession.
Loke said the study would encompass 16 aspects including marketability, environmental impact assessment and social impact on the local community.
According to Loke, the building of the third port in the locality was a long term project to ensure that the nation’s economic growth was not impacted as the existing ports, North Port in Port Klang and Westport would reach their maximum capacities by 2025.
“This project (port in Carey Island) involves 283 hectares and will have a maximum capacity of 30 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) ,” he said.
On the announcement by former Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai last year that the project was to be undertaken by Chinese investors, Loke said no company from the economic giant had stated its commitment to do the job.
Pressed further if the cost was RM200 billion as announced by Liow, Loke said the Pakatan Harapan government was not bound by any announcements made by the previous government.
