In an apparent response to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said today that Gabungan Parti Sarawak prioritises the health and safety of the people and will not rush into calling for a state election.
The state election must be held by June next year. Despite this, on the 31st of October 2020, Muhyiddin claimed that declaring a state of emergency in Sarawak would be the only way to stop a state wide election.
The claim was shot down by Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla via a video message (link below) in which the lawyer made note of the June deadline, adding that declaring a state of emergency was not necessary at all.
Muhyiddin’s speech is widely regarded to be disrespectful of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, who, barely a week earlier, had shot down a proposal by the Prime Minister that sought to invoke Article 150 of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.

PETALING JAYA: In an apparent response to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said today that Gabungan Parti Sarawak prioritises the health and safety of the people and will not rush into calling for a state election.
According to reports, Abang Johari said he was monitoring the Covid-19 situation closely while waiting for feedback from the health ministry and Election Commission (EC).
“I have said it before; I will listen to the advice of the experts, especially the health ministry. But, I have not received any feedback yet.
“So, let us give them more time to come up with the new SOPs. When the EC is ready, we are ready,” he said.
Asked if the 12th Sarawak state election was unlikely to be held this year, Abang Johari said he did not have any suitable date yet.
“I don’t know as well. It is the Covid-19 (situation) that will decide when the state polls will be held,” he said, adding that with Kuching having been classified as a red zone, the state government needed to focus to curb the spread of the disease first.
“We will decide later but as for now, the health and safety of our people is the top priority,” he said.

Article 150 pertains the Proclamation of a state of Emergency and dictates, among others, that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong may make the proclamation should His Royal Highness be satisfied that a grave emergency exists whereby the security, or the economic life, or public order in the Federation or any part thereof is threatened.
