Former Melaka CM expected to quit UMNO later today

A former Melaka chief minister is expected to announce his departure from Umno later today.

In September, former Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Adib Adam departed from Umno and joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).

Tan Sri Rahim Tamby Chik and Tan Sri Mohd Ali Rustam have also served as Melaka CM in the past.

MELAKA: A former Melaka chief minister is expected to announce his departure from Umno later today.

The leader, who is often regarded as Melaka’s father of development, is scheduled to make the announcement at a hotel in Ayer Keroh here at about 10am.

A source told the NSTP that the Umno leader, who used to hold a senior post in the party, will launch an anti-Umno movement called Hijrah.

“It is understood that many people have joined the movement. This will ply pressure on Umno, which is facing a leadership crisis,” the source said.

In September, former Melaka chief minister Datuk Seri Adib Adam departed from Umno and joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM).

Speculation is rife that Datuk Seri Idris Haron, who served as Melaka CM from 2013 to 2018, would follow suit.

Idris, however, denied the claim, saying he would remain loyal to the party.

“I am still an Umno member and I will always be an Umno member until Allah decides otherwise,” he said when contacted.

Tan Sri Rahim Tamby Chik and Tan Sri Mohd Ali Rustam have also served as Melaka CM in the past.
