Friday is Anwar’s D-day – it’s checkmate

Anwar’s recent insistence that Mahathir’s post-APEC exit be finalised during a Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council meeting simply means Pakatan will sit down, have coffee and endorse Mahathir’s leadership all over again. Source (pic): TTF

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad reportedly said he has no idea if the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council this Friday will discuss the transition plan for the post of Prime Pinister.

This follows a statement by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who said a final decision on power transition would be made this Friday.

The only way Anwar can come out with ego and reputation intact this Friday is if he goes into the meeting and insists that a transition date is fixed, a feat he will never dare to perform as the numbers are on Mahathir’s side.

On Monday, TTF pointed out that Mahathir’s promise to resign after the APEC summit can mean anything from him resigning towards the end of November to him resigning between December to the day the 14th Malaysian Parliament expires.

SUBANG JAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad reportedly said he has no idea if the Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council this Friday will discuss the transition plan for the post of Prime Pinister.

Mahathir, who is Pakatan Harapan chairman, also said he would not be raising the issue in the meeting.

“I’m only going to be a chair,” he quipped.

Dr Mahathir also reiterated his promise to handover the prime minister’s post after the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, which Malaysia is hosting is November.

“I have already said I am prepared to step down anytime I am asked to (step down).

“My promise is to step down, whatever decision is made (on power transition), I will step down after the APEC meeting,” Dr Mahathir said.

PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim contradicted himself last Thursday following a meeting he had with Mahathir.

First, he said he was willing to let Mahathir lead the country until after the APEC summit based on an assurance given by Mahathir during said meeting.

Then, he said a final decision on power transition would be made during the Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council meeting this coming Friday.

The contradiction raised questions as to why Anwar needed an assurance from Mahathir in the first place when clearly, he is bent on discussing power transition this Friday come hell or high water.

Even more curious is the fact that Anwar should talk about discussing power transition when the issue concerns him and Mahathir, both of whom seem to be in agreement on a ‘post-APEC’ transition.

On Monday, I pointed out that Mahathir’s promise to resign after the APEC summit can mean anything from him resigning towards the end of November to him resigning between December to the day the 14th Malaysian Parliament expires.

In other words, Mahathir has promised nothing.

I wrote:

It follows, Anwar’s sudden ‘willingness’ to wait until after the APEC summit to assume leadership of government is another way of him saying “Mahathir can resign any damn day he sees fit.”

Likewise, Anwar’s recent insistence that Mahathir’s post-APEC exit be finalised during a Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council meeting simply means Pakatan will sit down, have coffee and endorse Mahathir’s leadership all over again.

The only way Anwar can come out with ego and reputation intact this Friday is if he goes into the meeting and insists that a transition date is fixed, a feat he will never dare to perform as the numbers are on Mahathir’s side.

However, should Anwar decide to take the risk and propose a date anyway, Mahathir would simply expedite the setting up of a new coalition and make damn sure Malaysian politics is rid of the names Anwar Ibrahim and Lim Kit Siang.
