Former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was reportedly grilled by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for almost half a day, a move that has sparked uproar among netizens and a rights action group.
According to a news report, the Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy condemned the MACC’s actions as a form of “psychological torture” and claimed it jeopardised one’s mental health, and not to mention, allowed abuse of power while in custody.
Yesterday, the MACC confirmed that Syed Saddiq was asked to give his statement again but denied that the former minister was arrested.
MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki reportedly said that the Muar MP had not been arrested as alleged by social media users.
PETALING JAYA: Former Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was reportedly grilled by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for almost half a day, a move that has sparked uproar among netizens and a rights action group.
According to a news report, the Teoh Beng Hock Trust for Democracy condemned the MACC’s actions as a form of “psychological torture” and claimed it jeopardised one’s mental health, and not to mention, allowed abuse of power while in custody.
Syed’s detention was also compared to the detention and interrogation of Malaysian journalist and political aide Teoh Beng Hock who died in custody under mysterious circumstances.
On the 1st of July 2009, the MACC took Teoh into custody amid allegations of corruption involving him and his boss, Ean Yong Hian Wah.
Teoh was found dead the next morning on the rooftop of a building adjacent to the MACC offices.
Yesterday, the MACC confirmed that Syed Saddiq was asked to give his statement again but denied that the former minister was arrested.
MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki reportedly said that the Muar MP had not been arrested as alleged by social media users.
“We have asked him to come to the headquarters again this morning so that investigators can continue to interview him.
“But we did not make any arrests. If there was, we would have made a statement,” he said.
