The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is no longer seen as an impartial, independent and professional organisation battling corruption at the highest levels, claims former finance minister Lim Guan Eng.

Listing several cases in which he felt MACC had not done it’s job right, he pointed to the commission’s reluctance to conduct an investigation towards a cartel of corrupt police officers, including a former inspector-general of police (IGP) said to be on the payroll of crime syndicates.

“Malaysia’s rankings in the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index (CPI) has declined from 51st in 2019 to 57th in 2020.

If MACC fails to do its duty professionally and responsibly, this will only cause Malaysia’s CPI rankings to slip down further this year,” the DAP secretary-general said, adding that MACC must come clean and explain why there was still no action on these cases.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is no longer seen as an impartial, independent and professional organisation battling corruption at the highest levels, claims former finance minister Lim Guan Eng.

Listing several cases in which he felt MACC had not done it’s job right, he pointed to the commission’s reluctance to conduct an investigation towards a cartel of corrupt police officers, including a former inspector-general of police (IGP) said to be on the payroll of crime syndicates.

MACC had said it considered the case an internal police matter but Lim rubbished that notion.

“Corruption must not be settled internally but resolved publicly in courts,” he said in a statement today.

He also said federal government contracts had been granted to office bearers of Bersatu at a political meeting among Bersatu members.

“Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was also recorded on audio offering political posts and positions in government linked corporations (GLC) in exchange for political support,” he said in a statement today. “In the PPBM youth election, deputy youth and sports minister Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal had leveraged his public post to issue support letters.”

Lim also claimed the MACC had yet to act despite a request by Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee to do so after former transport minister Liow Tiong Lai was found to have granted a contract worth RM149.5 million directly to a company partly owned by the deputy minister of plantation industries and commodities Wee Jeck Seng.

Among the other cases that Lim listed were:

1. Tebrau MP Steven Choong, who defected from PKR to support the prime minister, had reportedly said Muhyiddin promised him an official position that would give him the platform to rebuild the economy.

2. Women, family and community development minister Rina Harun being able to settle a bankruptcy suit for debts amounting to RM1.3 million when she had declared assets of RM72,000 as of November 2019 with a monthly income of RM34,000.

3. An allegation by former Sabah chief minister Shafie Apdal, who said the leader of a previous Sabah state government had awarded 700,000 acres of forest reserve land under Yayasan Sabah to friends and family.

4. Deputy defence minister Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz’s letter of recommendation for his son to be appointed into the board of directors of Pharmaniaga, a company under the oversight and authority of the defence ministry, with defence minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob agreeing to it.

5. Federal Territories minister Annuar Musa’s letter of support endorsing a contractor’s bid to be awarded a huge highway project in Kelantan through direct negotiation.
