Guan Eng, you’d better start talking straight

TTF: Lim Guan Eng must come clean on his administration’s shortcomings. Unregulated development due to the wanton sale of state land to cash-rich developers and the lack of incentive to facilitate flood mitigation projects led to a massive disaster unheard of in Penang. Lives were lost, property was destroyed. The scale of the damage caused was disproportionate to the intensity of the storm. Penang has seen much worse rainstorms, none of which caused such destruction.

GEORGE TOWN: With the flood situation worsening in the state, the Penang government has reached out to the armed forces for help.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he contacted Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at 3.30am today seeking assistance.

“We have sought the assistance of the armed forces, which the Deputy Prime Minister has agreed to send.

“The flooding has worsened. The water level is still rising – 10 to 12 feet above the roof of houses – and the wind is still very strong.

“(Even) electricity supply at flood relief centres have been cut off,” he said.

Lim called for Penangites to stay calm as they face trying times.
