Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador today assured all journalists in the country of their safety following death threat claims by Al Jazeera staff.

“I want to give my assurance to the media, whether local media or foreign media, that your safety is guaranteed,” he said.

According to a report, the news agency rejected allegations that the documentary was inaccurate and unfair, saying it would continue to maintain the quality and impartiality of its journalism.


KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador today assured all journalists in the country of their safety following death threat claims by Al Jazeera staff.

“If there have been threats made, they can come forward and make a report and we, the police, will investigate it,” Abdul Hamid was reported as telling a news conference at Bukit Aman.

According to a news report, Hamid asked the public to “control their emotions” in their social media responses on the issue that has since sparked a national uproar.

He said the police will be fair in its investigations and will give an opportunity to those involved to explain themselves fully.

“Al Jazeera takes seriously the developments that have taken place in Malaysia since the release of the 101 East investigative documentary titled Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown on the 3rd of July.

“This documentary examines why foreign workers in Malaysia are at high risk during the Covid-19 outbreak,” a statement by Al Jazeera read.
