حمزه زاينوددين: بوكن موده داڤت كورڬنڬارأن د مليسيا
PETALING JAYA: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was quoted by Bernama as saying Malaysia is a sovereign that will not grant citizenship easily, including to children without identity cards.
According to Hamzah, being born in Malaysia does not automatically cause a person to obtain citizenship.
Clearly, individual citizenship is determined by the marital status and citizenship status of the biological parents at birth, in accordance with provisions under the Federal Constitution, Malaysian Citizenship Regulations 1964 and related legislation.
“Parents and guardians of individuals whose status is offspring who don’t possess identity cards or individuals whose citizenship and status have not been determined must submit valid documents to the government before their citizenship applications are approved as there have been cases of fraud,” he said at a question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. .
Hamzah was responding to a question from Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen (PH-Bandar Kuching) who asked about the government’s plans to facilitate the process of obtaining citizenship status for children without identity cards to address the issue quickly and holistically.
