KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, on leave from his duties as Umno president, is also taking a break from his position as Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman.
Ahmad Zahid announced earlier this week he would go on leave and handed over his duties as Umno president to his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
The latest announcement on Ahmad Zahid’s role as BN chairman was made by Mohamad after chairing Umno’s special Supreme Council meeting at Menara Dato Onn, here, today.
“He (Ahmad Zahid) is on leave including as chairman (of BN),” Mohamad, or Tok Mat as he is more commonly known as, said in his role as acting Umno chairman.
Mohamad also confirmed that the Supreme Council members had accepted Ahmad Zahid’s decision to hand over his duties as president to the party’s Deputy President.
The Bagan Datuk MP agreed to hand over his duties to Mohamad for the sake of the party’s strength and in the best interest of Umno’s leadership at all levels, especially its MPs, assemblymen and divisions.
Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is now the acting Umno deputy president.
Commenting on whether or not the Supreme Council meeting today had discussed the issue of ‘backdoor dealings’ by certain Umno leaders, Mohamad said they would be meeting with the MPs involved.
He said with the new party leadership, it has somewhat managed to pacify the situation which could have potentially led to more MPs leaving Umno.
“We will be meeting the MPs. We also hope the situation now has calmed down and satisfied hearts,” he added.
