Hishammuddin: Mahathir is trying to tear UMNO’s leadership apart

“I wish to stress that it will not work. All three of us (Najib, Zahid and himself) have a very strong relationship. The line has been drawn that this is our team and we will not be torn apart by attacks from outside”

KANGAR: “I have no doubt at all that it was Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who plotted a move to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.”

This was the response of Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to Dr Mahathir’s recent allegation that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had schemed to force Najib out of office two years ago.

Hishammuddin, who is also Defence Minister, said he has no doubt at all that Zahid would never do the thing alleged by Dr Mahathir.

In fact, he claims that it is Dr Mahathir who has been behind a plot to force Najib’s resignation, which Zahid has nothing to do with.

“I have no doubt at all that the person who wants to topple the prime minister is Tun Mahathir. Datuk Seri Zahid is the latest victim of (Dr Mahathir’s) scathing attack on (Umno) leaders.

“I believe that I am the next target, followed by other Cabinet ministers, to be attacked by him,” Hishammuddin told a press conference after opening the Kangar Umno division delegates meeting at Dewan Wawasan 2020 here today.

Present were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man and former menteri besar Datuk Seri Md Isa Sabu.

Hishammuddin said the attacks against Zahid and other Umno leaders were expected, as Dr Mahathir wishes to cause a split in the party leadership in the lead-up to the general election.
