Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari has dismissed a report on the alleged reluctance of his administration to rope in the army to assist in flood relief efforts in the state, saying there is no truth to the matter.
Amirudin said he had called Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Friday night with an urgent appeal for the latter to deploy federal assets to affected areas.
“I have the WhatsApp messages to prove it,” he added.
Quoting a source close to the matter, FMT had earlier reported that the army sprang into action on Friday to help evacuate flood victims to relief centres, without waiting for any directive from Nadma.
PETALING JAYA: Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari has dismissed a report on the alleged reluctance of his administration to rope in the army to assist in flood relief efforts in the state, saying there is no truth to the matter.
Amirudin said he had called Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Friday night with an urgent appeal for the latter to deploy federal assets to affected areas.
However, he claims the prime minister told him that it was not up to him and that it was instead under the purview of the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma).
“What was reported about my government being reluctant to call in the army to help was not true at all. That report was made in bad faith,” he told reporters at a press conference on the flood situation in the state today.
Amirudin also said he contacted defence minister Hishammuddin Hussein at around 8.45pm to tell him that he needed the army’s help.
“I have the WhatsApp messages to prove it,” he added.
Quoting a source close to the matter, FMT had earlier reported that the army sprang into action on Friday to help evacuate flood victims to relief centres, without waiting for any directive from Nadma.
According to the source, the army headed to the affected areas after the Friday prayers, and that both Nadma and the Selangor government had been reluctant to use them at first.
