Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad said he may be the shortest lived Menteri Besar in the state’s history should the 15th general election be held soon.

In a Facebook address today, the Johor Barisan Nasional chief acknowledged that he was appointed to the post midway an administrative term and accepted the context of his position.

On the 28th of February 2020, the same day Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was officially declared as Prime Minister elect, the Palace of Johor announced that Perikatan Nasional had obtained a majority and could form a new state government.

The coalition named Hasni as Menteri Besar candidate and witnessed his swearing in ceremony soon after.

PETALING JAYA: Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad said he may be the shortest lived Menteri Besar in the state’s history should the 15th general election be held soon.

In a Facebook address today, the Johor Barisan Nasional chief acknowledged that he was appointed to the post midway an administrative term and accepted the context of his position.

“I still have about two and a half years left before the next election, if it is not held earlier.

“If that is the case, I would probably be the shortest serving mentri besar and may also be called the Covid-19 MB due to my daily handling of the pandemic,” Hasni reportedly said.

Hasni also holds the post of Johor Umno chief.

On the 28th of February 2020, the same day Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was officially declared as Prime Minister elect, the Palace of Johor announced that Perikatan Nasional had obtained a majority and could form a new state government.

According to the Palace, 28 assembly members chose Perikatan Nasional to lead the Government of Johor while 26 others chose PH to remain government.

Two members did not attend the meeting. They were Amanah’s Simpang Jeram assemblyman Salahuddin Ayub and Bersatu’s Puteri Wangsa assemblyman Mazlan Bujang.

The palace later gave royal consent for Perikatan Nasional to nominate a chief minister and a new state executive council.

The coalition named Hasni as Menteri Besar candidate and witnessed his swearing in ceremony soon after.

However, things were not so smooth sailing for Hasni as many in PPBM were at odds with their counterparts in UMNO despite being from the same coalition.

On the 11th of May 2020, Johor Pakatan Harapan chief Aminolhuda Hassan said the state coalition was not ruling out tabling a no-confidence motion against Hasni.

However, Aminolhuda felt there was a better chance of such a motion coming from within Perikatan Nasional, citing growing tension between Umno and PPBM.

“The Mentri Besar does not have the support of all Perikatan assemblymen. So it is more likely for the motion to come from Perikatan itself instead of Pakatan in the coming state assembly sitting,” he said.

A day later, Aminolhuda backtracked, following a directive from the Sultan not to disrupt the state assembly, then due on the 14th of May 2020.

Hasni took over as Menteri Besar from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (PPBM) Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal.
