PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is looking to call for a general election this year to end doubts over his mandate.
This was reported by a local daily (MMO) amid speculation that Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN) led government came into power through the “backdoor” and lacks parliamentary majority,
According to The Straits Times, Muhyiddin made his intentions clear during a Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) supreme council meeting on the 4th of June 2020.
According to the daily further, the PPBM president has followed up on this by briefing divisional chiefs in several meetings ever since.
The move is said to have come after the three parties that represent the Malay-Muslim majority in his loose ruling alliance moved towards establishing an “electoral pact” in the past week.
However, Perikatan Nasional has yet to legitimise its existence by registering with the Registrar of Societies RoS) as a formal political entity.
Bersatu supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan reportedly confirmed to The Straits Times that the “PM has been meeting grassroots and has also instructed all party leaders to ramp up election preparation”.
“I support the idea of having a general election as soon as possible, once we are safe from the coronavirus situation, as it will end the propaganda over legitimacy and help create a more stable PN government,” he said.” “
On the 9th of June 2020, Pakatan Harapan held an “extraordinary emergency meeting” (EEM) with WARISAN president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, now leader of a splinter faction from PPBM.
The meeting established the formation of Pakatan Harapan Plus (PH Plus), a broad alliance of disparate political factions comprising Pakatan Harapan members and an affiliate block led by Mahathir.
The meeting is said to have agreed on a Prime Minister candidate in the event the Perikatan Nasional led government collapses.
An insider told TTF that Mahathir is of the opinion that the timing is not right for a general election due to the Covid-19 pandemic but is ready to face one “if it is what Muhyiddin wants.”
“Mahathir is ready, he is not worried. That’s all I know,” the insider claimed.
The meeting was chaired by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and attended also by Lim Guan Eng, Mohamad Sabu, Lim Kit Siang, Khalid Samad, Mukhriz Mahathir and Gobind Singh Deo, among others.
Mahathir is said to have obtained a “simple yet comfortable majority” that includes Members of Parliament from UMNO and PPBM.
