Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is in his final days as Prime Minister and is only delaying the inevitable – the complete collapse of the Perikatan Nasional led government.
Following his audience with the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, Muhyiddin claimed that His Royal Highness had agreed to his proposal that a vote of confidence be moved only when parliament convenes in September.
However, there is no confirmation whatsoever that the version Muhyuddin delivered to the rakyat is the truth, as the Prime Minister and his men have been caught with their pants down on more than one occasion, misleading the rakyat, the Dewan Rakyat and even the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
Let’s do a recap:
1. On the 12th of January 2021, when announcing the Proclamation of Emergency, Muhyiddin declared that Parliament and all State Legislative Assemblies would not sit until a time set by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
By doing so, Muhyiddin implied that the decision not to hold a special parliamentary sitting to debate the Emergency Proclamation as required by the Federal Constitution was at the behest of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
However, this was proven to be a lie when His Royal Highness decreed that there was nothing stopping parliament from convening.
To divert attention, Muhyiddin quickly insisted that parliament could not convene just yet as the incidence of Covid-19 was too high.
However, the special sitting was nowhere in sight even as the State of Emergency was drawing to an end.
2. On the 16th of June 2021, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was forced to decree that a special sitting was needed to debate the Emergency Proclamation and Ordinances.
However, the Ruler did not specify a date, saying only that the session needed to be called as soon as possible.
It was crystal clear that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was referring to the need for parliament to debate the Emergency Proclamation and Ordinances before the 1st of August 2021, the day the State of Emergency was due to end.
Being Law Minister, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan knew that the debate had to be held before the end of Emergency as required by the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.
But Takiyuddin pretended not to know this and noted how the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong had not specified a date, insisting that plans were afoot for parliament to reconvene in September or October.
Not only did Takiyuddin mislead the rakyat, it was akin to him saying, “the Government of Malaysia (GoM) is above the law, does not need to bother what the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong has to say and can override the Federal Constitution as it sees fit.”
Muhyiddin backed Takiyuddin by reiterating that parliament would convene only in September or October, more or less ignoring the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong and the need for the GoM to abide by the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.
3. On the 29th of June 2021, the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong was forced to issue a second decree, reminding government in very diplomatic terms that it was required to debate the Emergency Proclamation and Ordinances as soon as possible.
This prompted Muhyiddin to fix the 26th of July to the 2nd of August for a five-day special sitting, giving the impression that the debate would be held before the 1st of August 2021.
However, the sitting did not seem to give any room for debates or ministerial questions, let alone the voting of Bills.
A two-page order paper that surfaced soon after more or less confirmed this and featured only briefings by senior ministers and the presentation of 12 Emergency Ordinances.
Not only was this in defiance of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong’s decree, it was in defiance of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia.
4. On the 26th of July 2021, Takiyuddin shocked the Dewan Rakyat by revealing that the GoM had quietly revoked all emergency ordinances and that the revocation was effective the 21st of July 2021.
However, this turned out to be a complete lie – it was revealed by Istana Negara on the 29th of July 2021 that the revocation had yet to receive Royal consent.
It was also revealed that Takiyuddin and Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun did not fulfil their promises to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to have the revocation debated in Parliament.
Instead of reprimanding Takiyuddin or correcting him, Muhyiddin chose to walk out of the Dewan Rakyat, proving once and for all that the Prime Minister was in cahoots with the Law Minister and the Attorney-General and had blatant disregard for the Dewan Rakyat and the Royal Institution.
On the 4th of August 2021, Muhyiddin had an audience with the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, a day after UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced his party’s decision to withdraw its support for Muhyiddin and the GoM.
In doing so, Zahid revealed that Muhyiddin had lost his majority and that the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong had been presented with ‘sufficient’ statutory declarations (SDs) by UMNO members of parliament who expressed their withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin.
We have since come to know that eight SDs were presented to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on the 30th of July 2021 and that more were presented thereafter.
It has also come to my knowledge that Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri lied when he claimed that 31 Barisan Nasional Members of Parliament had expressed their support for Muhyiddin.
According to my sources, not only is the actual number way lower than that, some of those who expressed support for Muhyiddin have yet to ink that support by means of Statutory Declarations.
Anyway, Muhyiddin came out of his meeting with the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong looking jubilant, insisting that the Ruler had agreed to wait until September for a motion of confidence to be tabled in parliament.
However, the information I gathered paints an entirely different picture, one not so different from the picture painted by Sarawak Report.
Still, why should I trust Muhyiddin?
If he and his ministers can openly mislead the rakyat, the Dewan Rakyat and the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on more than one occasion and behave as if the GoM is above the Ruler, why do I need to listen to him and not the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who I revere?
Have you noticed how Istana Negara did not update anything on its Facebook regarding the audience Muhyiddin had with the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on the 4th of August 2021?
There is a reason for that, and the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong is probably waiting patiently for Muhyiddin to resign voluntarily.
It is an open secret that the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong delivered a vote of no confidence against Muhyiddin by expressing his utter disappointment with the latter and his administration for misleading parliament.
It’s only a matter of time before Istana Negara comes out with an official statement, and my gut feeling is that the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong does not have good news for Muhyiddin.
Let’s wait and see, shall we?
