Japanese Ambassador thanks Mahathir for Look East Policy, says it should continue

Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Takahashi Katsuhiko thanked former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for initiating the Look East Policy (LEP) in 1982, aimed at social and economic development in Malaysia through Japanese patronage and guidance.

Taking to Twitter, Takahashi agreed that the LEP should continue and said Japan would work with “Malaysain friends.” 

On Friday, Takahashi paid a courtesy call to Mahathir amid an ongoing series of events, scheduled until the 26th of November this year, aimed at commemorating the 40th anniversary of the LEP.

“It has been 40 years since the policy was introduced back in 1982.

“Over the years both Malaysia and Japan had benefited much.

“The Japanese government at that time had responded very actively and I am glad that they are still very supportive.

“The LEP should continue and be enhanced in the future,” Mahathir said.
