A Delaware grand jury has indicted William Stevenson, 77, on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
Stevenson was taken into custody on Monday following what police described as an “extensive weeks-long investigation.” He was later committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 cash bail, according to New Castle County Police.
William Stevenson has previously been identified in public records as the former husband of Jill Biden, now the first lady of the United States. The two were married for five years before divorcing. Jill Biden later married then-Senator Joe Biden.

The case stems from a Dec. 28 incident in which officers were dispatched to a residence in response to a reported domestic dispute. Upon arrival, police found Linda Stevenson unresponsive. She was later pronounced dead.
Her body was transferred to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy. As of Tuesday, authorities had not publicly disclosed a cause of death.
Investigators did not release additional details regarding the circumstances leading to the charge.
