For years, the Penang state administration of Lim Guan Eng maintained that the state was being run in accordance with principles of Competency, Accountability and Transparency (CAT). Yet, we hear of illegal land deals, massive instances of hillslope cutting and the lack of regard for human lives. And what do we have today?
An undersea tunnel project fraught with conspiracy.
Ever since the Pinhorn Road bungalow-for-land scam deal first blew wide open, the Chief Minister of Penang maintained that the charges preferred against him were the doing of Barisan Nasional. On the day of his arrest in 2016, his father, Lim Kit Siang, stood outside the gates of the MACC building in the wee hours of the morning to declare that a conspiracy existed to do his son in.
And what did Karma do?
Well, Karma taught Kit Siang that it was wrong to blindly accuse people of doing stuff they did not do. When the senior Lim accused the government of attempting to “finish his son off,” Karma dealt him a blow by dragging his son to the altars of justice. Likewise, when Guan Eng accused Barisan of being “traditional saboteurs,” Karma decided to show the people of Penang just who was sabotaging their land.
Yes, Karma can be quite a bitch.
And it is this bitch that currently is chasing Guan Eng through the undersea tunnel by making known his misdeeds a chapter at a time (see news item below). If the bungalow-for-land scam episode failed to teach the Chief Minister a lesson, it is highly unlikely that he is learning one this time around. That probably explains why he came out yesterday to claim that the MACC already investigated the tunnel project in 2016 and found nothing amiss.
Yet another lie, yet another day.
Karma will now show the people of Penang why it does not pay to lie. As the days go by, we will discover that no investigation was ever conducted into the tunnel project in 2016. Seriously, why do you think Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak does not come out every now and then to accuse Mahathir of sabotaging 1MDB?
Despite it being true, the Prime Minister prefers to let Karma do its job, which explains why an RCI was finally able to prove that RM31.5 billion was gambled away by Mahathir’s men in the forex market. Now, tell me, don’t you just love this bitch called Karma?
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission today raided nine more companies in Penang and Kuala Lumpur as part of ongoing efforts to gather documents relating to the Penang undersea tunnel project.
It is understood that the MACC has already recorded statements from eight individuals, including a company secretary, advisers and consultants, and that more people are expected to be called up for questioning.
“We will call up a few important individuals to get their statements,” MACC deputy commissioner Datuk Seri Azam Baki said in a statement.
Yesterday, the MACC investigation team recorded statements of 12 witnesses from the state finance office, stage economic planning unit, public works department, land and mines department and a managing director of a company.
They also seized documents from the land and mines department.
The controversial 7.2km undersea tunnel, which was awarded to Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd, was proposed to connect Gurney Drive on the island to Bagan Ajam in Butterworth as part of the state’s Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) to ease traffic congestion in the state.
The feasibility studies for the tunnel was delayed for almost two years and last October, Consortium Zenith claimed there was no hurry to complete the studies as the project is only expected to start in 2023.
