Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said today that the Kelantan government has accepted Sultan Muhammad V’s decision to step down as the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
Asked whether he was shocked by the decision, Ahmad, who is also Pas spiritual leader, said there was no indications that Sultan Muhammad V had intended to step down when they last met during the recent Friday prayers.
TUMPAT: The Kelantan government has accepted Sultan Muhammad V’s decision to step down as the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said the state government as well as the people accepted the decision with an open heart as it was Sultan Muhammad V’s right to do so.
“The Ruler has followed all the rules when he decided to step down as Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, and he has made it official.
“As the leader of the state government, I will discuss the issue further with the state secretary and protocol division for subsequent action,” he said.
Asked whether he was shocked by the decision, Ahmad, who is also Pas spiritual leader, said there was no indications that Sultan Muhammad V had intended to step down when they last met during the recent Friday prayers.
Ahmad was speaking to reporters after delivering Maghrib kuliah at Al- Hidayah mosque near Kampung Laut here on Sunday.
Sultan Muhammad V stepped down as Yang Di-Pertuan Agong effective Sunday.
The news was conveyed via a statement from Istana Negara’s Comptroller of the Royal Household, who said the King had
had officially informed the matter to other Malay rulers through a letter sent to the secretary of the Conference of Rulers.
It said the resignation was done in accordance with the Article 32(3) of the Federal Constitution
