Pas deputy Spiritual leader and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob believes the post of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner should have gone to other senior officers from the anti-graft agency.

Ahmad however said Pas would accept the decision made by the Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in appointing Latheefa.

TUMPAT: Pas believes the post of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner should have gone to other senior officers from the anti-graft agency.

The party’s deputy Spiritual leader and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said that existing MACC senior officers were more experienced and suitable for the top anti-graft agency post compared to Latheefa Beebi Koya (Latheefa Koya).

“Pas looks at this in a political way and we believe the post should be given according to seniority or professional status.

“There should be a deputy, other senior officers or even a state director who are capable of assuming the post rather that Latheefa who has no experience,” Ahmad told reporters at his Hari Raya open house here today.

Ahmad however said Pas would accept the decision made by the Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in appointing Latheefa.

Pas secretary general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan in a statement earlier today said the Islamic party welcomed Latheefa’s appointment as new MACC chief commissioner.

He said Pas was confident that Latheefa was suitable for the post especially since she was no longer a member of any political party.

“However, she must prove that she can do the task given to her without fear or favour in her efforts to tackle corruption at all levels,” he said.

Latheefa, a Human rights lawyer and Lawyers for Liberty executive director, was appointed as MACC chief commissioner effective June 1.

Her appointment comes following the resignation of Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull who shortened his contract of service which was due to end on May 17, 2020.
