KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said it viewed seriously allegations that one of its officers had assaulted three policemen in the course of an investigation.

MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya said she had zero tolerance for custodial abuse of any kind.

She added that MACC has put in a strict Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) governing the arrest and detention of suspects.

“In this case the policemen who made this complaint were being investigated by the MACC for alleged extortion from suspected drug abusers.

“This investigation was part of the increased operations by Selangor MACC into alleged extortion activities involving police personnel”, she said in a statement.

Latheefa said a report had also been lodged by the MACC officer stating that the allegations of assault by the police officers were false.

“MACC will render its fullest cooperation with the ongoing police investigation into these reports,” she said.

The three policemen in question had alleged that the MACC officer hit them when they were at the Selangor MACC office in Shah Alam recently to give their statements.

The cops, aged 24, 25, and 26, from the narcotics criminal investigation division of the Sungai Buloh district police headquarters were at the MACC office to assist in investigations into a case.
