DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has hinted that Tan Sri Azam Baki’s refusal to meet with the Parliament Select Committee (PSC) for Agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department could bring an end to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Pakatan Harapan and government.

According to reports, the senior Lim pointed out that among items agreed in the MoU was for reforms for more PSCs and to empower these to be more effective.

Azam’s case has sparked furor among activists, politicians and lawyers alike, who have called for his unequivocal suspension as Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner and for an independent Task Force (Special Task Force) to investigate him.

Azam had confessed to allowing his brother to use his trading account to buy shares, raising concerns that the act was in breach of Section 25 of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act (SICDA).

“Azam-gate has become a test case for the CSR MoU whether the parliamentary special select committee on Agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department can function meaningfully,” Lim said.

Lim also insisted that the Securities Commission’s statement yesterday did not absolve Azam, and simply concluded that it was unable to “conclusively establish” that Azam had breached the law.

Azam is also suspected of having breached the MACC Act 2009 (refer article below) as well as guidelines that establish the maximum worth of shares that a person in public office may hold.

The Prime Minister’s reluctance to advice the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong to suspend Azam and the Attorney-General’s silence on the matter has raised speculation that Azam could be holding secrets that the government is afraid will go public.
