“Not only did Pakatan Harapan fail to vote Anwar in for the post of Prime Minister when given the chance by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong – and it was a vote, say what you may – Anwar’s failure was proof that the majority in parliament just didn’t believe in his leadership”

On the 27thof March 2017, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang vowed to “soldier on” during the 14th general election despite the “relentless attacks against his character.”
“The high-powered well-orchestrated campaign by Umno and BN leaders to demonise and destroy me will have the effect of hardening my resolve not to succumb to such ‘dirty politics’ of hate, fear and intimidation.
“If I finally decide to soldier on during the next election, I have to thank the BN’s ‘dirty tricks department’ for their high-powered and well-orchestrated campaign of lies and falsehoods to try to destroy and break my spirit,” he said.
However, on the 7th of July the same year, the senior Lim assured us that if the DAP is proven to be a Christian political entity, he would quit from the party without hesitation.
“I reject any political party that is entirely based on Christianity or has a “Christian agenda,” he said.
Two years later, on the 10th of May 2019, Kit Siang told Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan that he was willing to bet his political career on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s pledge that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be the next prime minister.
This was a lie, as Mahathir had never made a pledge to this effect. Still, in a statement, the senior Lim promised to retire from politics and not contest in the 15th general election if Mohamad won the bet.
“At the PBS Sandakan by-election ceramah last night, the Umno acting president, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will not keep his promise of passing on the prime minister’s post to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and that he will sooner dissolve Parliament and call for fresh elections instead.
“I have more confidence in (Dr) Mahathir and I am prepared to have a wager with Mohamad that (Dr)Mahathir will honour the Pakatan Harapan commitment to pass the prime minister’s post to Anwar.
“If Mahathir does not pass the Prime Minister’s post to Anwar and instead dissolve Parliament to call for early 15th General Elections, I will retire from politics and will not contest in the 15th General Election,” he said.
And what happened?
On the 6thof November 2019, I lodged a police report against his son, Lim Guan Eng, at the Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) in Subang Jaya and submitted evidence of the latter’s pro-evangelist, anti-Islam and anti-Malay bent.
This was in response to a speech Guan Eng delivered to a DAP assemble in Muar, Johor, during the Tanjung Piai by-election campaign.
Accordingly, Guan Engtold the crowd – in his capacity as DAP secretary-general – that a vote for the MCA was akin to a vote for UMNO’s and PAS’ “extremist religious philosophies” which prohibited Christians from congregating for prayers.
This itself should be reason enough for Kit Siang to quit the DAP as every indicator suggests that his son was promoting Christian evangelism as DAP leader and pitting the predominantly Chinese crowd against the Malay-Muslims.
That’s not all.
On the 29th of February 2020, Mahathir shocked not just the nation, but the whole world when he resigned as Prime Minister and collapsed the federal cabinet.
This effectively meant the former premier had fulfilled his pledge to step down before the 14th Malaysian parliament could go full circle.
Note, Mahathir had never promised to “pass the baton” to Anwar as Kit Siang claimed, but merely to step down and pave the way for Anwar to become Prime Minister.
Besides, it isn’t constitutionally possible for Mahathir to decide who gets to become Prime Minister as the onus is on Members of Parliament, not an exiting premier, to provide majority support for a candidate.
But not only did Pakatan Harapan fail to vote Anwar in for the post of Prime Minister when given the chance by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong – and it was a vote, say what you may – Anwar’s failure was proof that the majority in parliament just didn’t believe in his leadership.
It follows, not only did Mahathir fulfil his promise to resign, he succeeded in proving that no matter who promised what, Anwar just wasn’t cut out for the top job and may never get to become Prime Minister.
Still, given that Mahathir did not “pass the Prime Minister’s post to Anwar” – even if it is an impossibility – Kit Siang should keep his end of the bargain, stop the incessant lies and retire from the DAP and politics for good.
