LTTE arrests: Anwar unsure if he should agree or disagree with use of SOSMA

Anwar’s response to the whole affair is signature of his trademark “yes and no,” “I agree and disagree” and “I support and don’t support” position on just about everything, including religion, politics and even the question of national security. Source (pic): TTF

Yesterday, the Malay Mail Online reported that Anwar was agreeable to the use of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) by the police to address issues involving terrorism, including the detention of several individuals in connection with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Sinar had something different altogether to offer its readers. According to the Malay daily, Anwar agreed with the detention of all those suspected of having links with the LTTE but disagreed with the use of SOSMA by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) as the law was “too harsh.”

Berita Harian was a little more cautious and chose middle ground, highlighting instead that Anwar was agreeable to “counter terrorism measures” by PDRM without fear or favour but felt that SOSMA was “too harsh” and “opposed by many.”

Regardless, and from the looks of it, Anwar is in a dilemma trying to decide if he should support or oppose the use of SOSMA, probably because he knows that Lim Kit Siang is dead against it but the general public isn’t.

SUBANG JAYA: It is not unusual for reporters to get confused whenever they try to put into proper sentences what Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim tries to convey each time he issues a statement.

Yesterday, the Malay Mail Online reported the PKR president as agreeing to the use of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) by the police to address issues involving terrorism, including the detention of several individuals in connection with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The portal, however, noted that Anwar wanted certain aspects and sections of Sosma to be amended and improved for the benefit of all parties, as the law has been deemed too harsh.

“We have been against this Act from the very beginning. However, if it is to do with counter-terrorism, I support the police’s action to use Sosma, not only against the LTTE, but also against all forms of terrorism,” the portal quoted Anwar as saying.

I doubt that to be the case, judging from sentiments abound and the support PDRM received online.

Regardless, and from the looks of it, Anwar is in a dilemma trying to decide if he should support or oppose the use of SOSMA, probably because he knows that Lim Kit Siang is dead against it but the general public isn’t.

All portals, however, were in agreement that the PKR president denied the arrest of former PKR members during the recent spate of LTTE arrests.
