LTTE case involving six men transferred to High Court

The Sessions Court today transferred the case of six men who were charged with giving support to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorist group to the High Court.

The five are chief executive officer of a corporation, S. Chandru, 38, technician S. Arivainthan, 27, storekeeper S.Thanagaraj, 26, security guard M.Pumugan, 29, national secondary school teacher in Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor, Sundram Renggan @ Rengasamy, 52, and taxi driver V.Balamurugan, 37.

On Oct 31, Chandru, Arivainthan, Thanagaraj, Pumugan, Sundram and Balamurugan were charged with giving support to the LTTE terrorist group by using their respective Facebook account under the names of “Ariventhan Subramaniam”, “Tamilarasan Sivam”, Pumagan Tamilan” ,”Chandru Suparmaniam”, “Elilan Elilan” and ‘Balamurugan Veerasamy’.

The charge under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code provides for a life sentence or a maximum 30 years’ jail or fine and forfeiture of any asset used or intended to be used to commit the offences, upon conviction.

Judge Azura Alwi made the order after allowing deputy public prosecutor Mohd Firdaus Abu Hanipah’s application to have the case transferred from the Sessions Court to the High Court for trial.

“The defence can raise the issue on bail and other applications relating to the trial at the High Court,” Mohd Firdaus said.

The five were represented by counsel Ramkarpal Singh, R.T Rajasekaran and Syarifah Sofian.

On Oct 31, Chandru, Arivainthan, Thanagaraj, Pumugan, Sundram and Balamurugan were charged with giving support to the LTTE terrorist group by using their respective Facebook account under the names of “Ariventhan Subramaniam”, “Tamilarasan Sivam”, Pumagan Tamilan” ,”Chandru Suparmaniam”, “Elilan Elilan” and ‘Balamurugan Veerasamy’.

They were charged with committing the offences at the Office of E8(M) Investigating Officer of the Special Branch Bukit Aman here at 9am and pm between Jan 11 and Oct 11 this year.

The charge under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code provides for a life sentence or a maximum 30 years’ jail or fine and forfeiture of any asset used or intended to be used to commit the offences, upon conviction.

Their pleas were not recorded as they were detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) and cases under Sosma are tried at the High Court.
