Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told a press conference this evening that the Perikatan Nasional run government was using the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to pressure the opposition.

This was in conjunction with the arrest of a Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) youth leader by the MACC over the disappearance of cash worth RM200k belonging to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

Mahathir said a female detainee was subject to questioning in a dark room by some men in an apparent attempt to put pressure on the youth wing.

Earlier today, MACC chief investigative director Datuk Norazlan Mohd Razali confirmed that a 27-year-old youth had been detained to assist with investigations.

PETALING JAYA: Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told a press conference this evening that the Perikatan Nasional run government was using the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to pressure the opposition.

This was in conjunction with the arrest of a Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) youth leader by the MACC over the disappearance of cash worth RM200k belonging to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

“We find some government departments are doing things that abuse their authority.

“Some people are being questioned on income tax. It was the same thing under Najib.

“It is alright to question PPBM Youth but they are using ‘pressure’,” he said.

Mahathir said a female detainee was subject to questioning in a dark room by some men in an apparent attempt to put pressure on the youth wing.

He then accused the government of bribing critics with positions.

“They can name anything and they are given. Like posts, ministerial ranks. A minister gets RM18,000 a month. Some people have unfortunately succumbed to this.

“We are going to the days of Najib. As time goes on it may be get worse,” he said.

Earlier today, MACC chief investigative director Datuk Norazlan Mohd Razali confirmed that a 27-year-old youth had been detained to assist with investigations.

Norazlan however denied rumours that four youth leaders were detained, saying it was a vicious rumour spread by a Facebook user to discredit the MACC.
