#TTFCovid19: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today put China and South Korea’s success story in battling the Coronavirus pandemic down to discipline, saying the Asian countries were much more inclined to follow instructions than Europeans or the Americans.
“They have a different culture from Europe and the US. They are very disciplined and when the government gives instructions, the people follow,” the former prime minister said during a Facebook Live interview with Sunway Velocity Medical Centre’s Dr Nurul Yaqeen.
On a separate note, the former premier said Malaysia needed to study carefully the lifting of the Movement Control Oreder (MCO) as the pandemic isn’t likely to blow over soon.
“There is no one date where we can say we are already free, we can go back to normal.
“Because I believe that to handle this viral outbreak, there are some that we can bring forward, there are some that we can postpone, because some are easily exposed, while some work is not easily exposed,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today put China and South Korea’s success story in battling the Coronavirus pandemic down to discipline, saying the Asian countries were much more inclined to follow instructions than Europeans or the Americans.
The former prime minister said this during a Facebook Live interview with Sunway Velocity Medical Centre’s Dr Nurul Yaqeen.
“They have a different culture from Europe and the US. They are very disciplined and when the government gives instructions, the people follow,” he said, adding that the United States and Europe were paying a “high price” for putting personal freedom before safety in the battle against Covid-19.
“In China, the government decided that the citizens must abide by the laws, or else they will be punished. But when freedom is given importance, then the rules won’t be obeyed and we will suffer the consequences.
“In Europe, you see that sometimes they feel like they are more advanced than other nations and have better medical facilities so they believe they can handle it,” he said.
As for the possibility of businesses resuming operations, Mahathir said workplaces that do not involve many people gathering in one place could gradually be allowed to do so while places such as supermarkets could maintain crowd control to observe social distancing.
“So what will happen is that this outbreak will not end in one go, it will take time,” he said.
