Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reiterated that the handover of the premiership is an issue that has not been discussed, and that fixing a specific date for this to take place is difficult.
On the 24thof June 2019, Mahathir committed to stepping down as Prime Minister within a three-year timeframe, a commitment he reaffirmed last month during a televised dialogue session with members of the United States Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in New York.
However, unlike the previous announcement he made no mention whatsoever of PKR president Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim and merely spoke of a “candidate.”
Mahathir’s latest remark is consistent with TTF’s position that an agreement was never reached between him and Anwar on the issue of premiership succession and that a discussion on the matter by leaders of Pakatan Harapan, if any, was never conclusive or binding.
PETALING JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reiterated that the handover of the premiership is an issue that has not been discussed, and that fixing a specific date for this to take place is difficult.
According to the Star Online, the Prime Minister said the power transition between him and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would depend on how much he was able to accomplish.
“We have to study the situation.
“It will be difficult to fix a specific date (when) the work is half done or not done,” he said after launching the Security and Public Order Policy on Tuesday (Oct 3).

Several of Mahathir’s loyalists, including Dato’ Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan and Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim have come out to say it point blank that Anwar was not in the running to become Prime Minister.

Anwar was serving jail time back when the matter was deliberated.
