Malaysia in 2018 is headed for growth

Salleh Said Keruak

When you hear the anti-government rhetoric you get the picture that Malaysia is going bankrupt. Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Pakatan Harapan’s Prime Minister-in-waiting, said Malaysia is going to the dogs. Actually, all these are opposition lies and the truth is opposite to what they are saying.

The World Bank global economic growth forecast for 2018 is 3.1% — 2.2% for advanced economies and 4.5% for emerging markets and developing economies. In the East Asia and Pacific region, the economic growth forecast is 6.2% — 6.4% for China and 5.3% for Indonesia.

For Malaysia, the economic growth forecast for 2018 is 5.5% — far better than the US (2.5%), the UK (1.4%), Japan (1.4%), Germany (2.4%), Singapore (2.5%), and so on. An economic growth of 2-3% is considered normal while anything 5% and above is superb. So Malaysia is in the ‘superb’ category and not going bankrupt as how they spin.
