Man who put Anwar in jail sets him free 20 years later

Anwar is a free man. In a sheer twist of irony, the man who jailed him in 1998, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is the very man who sets him free 20 years later. The former-premier-turned-premier-again is impressing upon the rakyat that he has repented, that his mission is to undo the mistakes he made back when he was premier in the eighties and nineties.

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is today a free man after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V granted him a full pardon.

The Pardons Board met today and decided on his case, according to a statement from Istana Negara.

The PKR de facto leader was serving a five-year jail term after being convicted of sodomy.

Sultan Muhammad V granted Anwar, his wife and PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as well as party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali an audience at Istana Negara at noon.

Anwar was earlier discharged from the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital, where he was warded to recover from a recent surgery, and went straight to Istana Negara for the special audience with the King.
